Cyclists own the road?

I was unaware that the laws had changed so that cyclists no longer had to follow any rules…

I’ve said it before – The hardcore cyclists have adopted this sense of entitlement which is beyond obnoxious; and dangerous.

A few days ago I turned onto this road and look in my rear view mirror and see this cyclist in the middle of the lane with a line of cars behind him.. We get to the intersection and stop at the red light – The cyclist rides around me and pulls up to the car in front of me and starts yelling at him.  Unfortunately I didn’t think quick enough to start recording it earlier.. I have to say I was stunned at what I was hearing..

From what the guy said he was pissed that the car passed him.. He proceeded to yell at the driver that he’s entitled to drive down the middle of the road and that the car is the one that needs to be careful.. Wait, what?  Are you really saying this right now?

Further down the street we came across two cyclists riding side by side in busy traffic… For what reason can’t you ride in a line like cars have to?  I beeped once, they looked back at me like I’m the asshole..

Look, I’m all for sharing the road – I used to bike a lot; but I was always showed respect to motorists.  If I get all big headed and stupid about it then it’s only going to end up with me getting hurt because I was careless..
They can’t ask for the same respect if they’re going to be running red lights and blowing through stop signs.

The general observation I’ve made is the ones who generally ignore all the rules are those fully decked out in their spandex outfits.  They’re so hardcore that nothing applies to them.

I don’t know if it’s like this everywhere; but it’s definitely happening in Massachusetts.  Before you yell at a motorist, stop and think whether you’ve been following the rules yourself… Show the same respect you expect in return.

Am I wrong about this? I may be, but I have yet to hear an intelligent argument from one of these hardcore cyclists; from the boards I’ve read it’s generally them hurling verbal assaults at the gas guzzling motorists…  Well that’s almost a whole other topic.
