Cyclists own the road?

I was unaware that the laws had changed so that cyclists no longer had to follow any rules…

I’ve said it before – The hardcore cyclists have adopted this sense of entitlement which is beyond obnoxious; and dangerous.

A few days ago I turned onto this road and look in my rear view mirror and see this cyclist in the middle of the lane with a line of cars behind him.. We get to the intersection and stop at the red light – The cyclist rides around me and pulls up to the car in front of me and starts yelling at him.  Unfortunately I didn’t think quick enough to start recording it earlier.. I have to say I was stunned at what I was hearing..

From what the guy said he was pissed that the car passed him.. He proceeded to yell at the driver that he’s entitled to drive down the middle of the road and that the car is the one that needs to be careful.. Wait, what?  Are you really saying this right now?

Further down the street we came across two cyclists riding side by side in busy traffic… For what reason can’t you ride in a line like cars have to?  I beeped once, they looked back at me like I’m the asshole..

Look, I’m all for sharing the road – I used to bike a lot; but I was always showed respect to motorists.  If I get all big headed and stupid about it then it’s only going to end up with me getting hurt because I was careless..
They can’t ask for the same respect if they’re going to be running red lights and blowing through stop signs.

The general observation I’ve made is the ones who generally ignore all the rules are those fully decked out in their spandex outfits.  They’re so hardcore that nothing applies to them.

I don’t know if it’s like this everywhere; but it’s definitely happening in Massachusetts.  Before you yell at a motorist, stop and think whether you’ve been following the rules yourself… Show the same respect you expect in return.

Am I wrong about this? I may be, but I have yet to hear an intelligent argument from one of these hardcore cyclists; from the boards I’ve read it’s generally them hurling verbal assaults at the gas guzzling motorists…  Well that’s almost a whole other topic.

Overstock does it right..

We recently ordered a new bed from Overstock.com which shipped in 3 boxes.  One of the components, a mid-beam support, was not in great shape.   Some of the hardware embedded in the beam to secure the legs was half falling out, and the center support legs just fall off.

It’s not the fault of Overstock, but the fault of the manufacturer.  I went into the MyAccount section of the website and followed the steps to report order issues – Well, I didn’t read it all thoroughly and had initiated a full return. Oops..  Within a minute there were 3 return shipping labels & instructions in the inbox :)

Plan B… Chat.  I don’t like dealing with support via email, and I don’t always want to pick up the phone so chat is a great option to have.

The chat agent was excellent – Professional, efficient, and knowledgeable.

One of the biggest contrasts between this experience and the one I had with Sprint is the following:
The agent said ‘I’m so sorry you’re having this problem, I’m happy to help you get this resolved’.    Wow, what an ‘impact statement’.  Empathy, and the clear objective to take ownership and resolve the issue.

It’s a very simple statement, but it carries a huge impact as it can immediately put the customer at ease.  Of course the second part is that they have to follow through on that.. Which they did.  The whole process took about 4 minutes from the time I clicked chat to the time I disconnected and filled out the survey.

There was no hassle, no arguing, and I felt like a valued customer.

Thank you Overstock!

Does Sprint Care?

I’ve been a customer of Sprint for about 14 years.  I’ve been there through the ups and downs, and I’ve stuck by them through the worst of their customer service.

How often do you find a company that understand this?   It tends to be the small business that recognizes it’s long time loyal customers; the big companies only pretend to care.  To Sprints credit, when I call they do take a moment to thank me for being a long time customer – Nice touch.

I had an issue recently with one of their corporate stores.  I had dust blowouts in the corners under the glass screen.  I went to the closest store; about 30min away.  The employee took my phone outback and cleaned it out.  When I received my phone back it had 2 dead pixels(the screen was clear in this section before he cleaned it).  They were closing, so I left.

Over the next two weeks I experienced some additional issues:

  • Phone would slow to a crawl while going through email or calendar, etc.. (I did a full factory reset twice & ran w/o 3rd party apps, still experienced). It was not constant, but it would happen about once a day.
  • Calls dropping frequently(Happened while on the phone w/ cust service manager twice, sitting in the same spot w/ full signal)
  • Bluetooth randomly shutting off while on a call(Also while on w/ cust service manager).

So I called Sprint customer service and explained my problems and the service I received from that store.  She agreed they should take care of it and called the store.  When she came back on the line she advised that if I take the phone to the store and show the manager the dead pixels they will exchange the phone.  This is why I have insurance and a warranty anyhow, right?  It’s important to note that this agent was excellent. She cares about her customers and it shows.

I did just that, drove down to the store,  and spoke with the agent at the desk – He called over the assistant manager.. This is where it all turns sour.  The first words out of this clowns mouth were ‘There’s no way we could have caused that, we don’t clean a screen and do other damage like that, it must have been something you did’ …  Are you fucking kidding me?  Do I need to come over this counter and help you put your foot in your own mouth you ignorant shit?

I wasn’t going to deal with him anymore – I spoke to someone else because the manager was not there.  This kid tried to help, but he was also quite defensive, and he just didn’t seem to listen.  He brought he phone over to their repair window, I waited along the wall, out of site but within ear-shot… Even though I explained the slowness even after a hard reset he told them “He says it’s slow but I think it’s some of the apps he has on here, its something he’s doing”.

He said that they would order a new screen, replace the screen & if they didn’t experience the slowness and the other issues that they would only replace the screen. I told him I don’t want to come back multiple times for this issue, specifically this store. I’m here now, the phone is under warranty(and I pay for insurance) why can’t you just replace the phone now.  They don’t see any other issues and they can only order a new screen.

After the way I was treated by the asst. manager I did not want to have to come back to this store.  I told him forget it, if he can’t resolve it just give me the managers info & I’ll deal with them directly.  I left – From the parking lot I called Sprint customer service.  After explaining my situation I was immediately transferred to a manager.  He got on the phone and started talking and talking without a word from me.  I interrupted him at one point and gave him the real story… This guy was great at making excuses, everything is the fault of someone-else.  Not once did he seem to stop and think “How can I help this customer out?”.

I had to keep interrupting him and at one point I asked… “Are you really telling me you’d rather lose a 14year customer than take ownership of the issue and get this resolved?  His response was comical.. No of course we don’t want to lose you as a customer, but there’s nothing we can do here, it all has to be done in the stores.  The new CEO has changed things around so that all the power is in the stores, only they can replace and fix phones.

This call went on for nearly 45 minutes… It was constant excuses and me responding with “You’re customer service, you represent Sprint, right? I’m an unhappy customer with an issue and I need you to take ownership and get it resolved since your store could not..” I did not say they had to mail me a new phone – but I needed someone there to take ownership of the issue and follow through…  Finally we came to a compromise – He would enter a ticket and request that the manager from that store call me.. He was clear about one thing though: “I cannot force the manager to call you..”.  Right, so you’re telling me it’s unlikely she’ll call… No I’m just saying I’m not there so I can’t physically make her pick up the phone and call.  This is a joke, right?  Unreal.
He did say he would also email her directly and request that she called, and when my phone dropped the call twice he did call me back. I do appreciate that.

Two days later I went to a 3rd party Sprint store. It’s not a corporate store but they only sell Sprint/Nextel.  The employee was nice, professional and he listened to my issues.  He said to me: ‘I’ll take care of you and get this resolved. ‘   He spent a few minutes looking over the phone, reviewing the issues I had and then said ‘Yeah I see what you mean, I’ll get you a replacement ordered’… Simple as that.  10 minutes in the store and the issue was resolved.   This was a Saturday, my replacement phone arrived on Monday.   It was 5 days from the time I talked to the cust service manager before I received a call from the manager of the Sprint corporate store(She was full of excuses as well, I doubt the assistant manager will ever get the feedback).

Listen, I know some of you will read this and say “you’re just impatient, you’re a pain in the ass customer, stop your whining, etc”.. Had the store treated me like a valued customer I would have waited for the screen replacement and gone through the steps – Instead they called me a liar, treated me like crap and expected me to deal with it.

The employee at the 3rd party store treated me with respect, and he took the time to listen, and most importantly – he took ownership of the issue.

I will no longer give my business to the corporate store; I will drive out of my way to visit the 3rd party store and give my business to them.

I was very close to canceling everything; and maybe I should have – But this one employee made all the difference.  He didn’t do anything extraordinary; he simply treated me as a valued customer and showed me the same respect he would expect to receive.

I’m not one of those people that gets on the phone and yells at the agent, or makes a big scene.  I’ve been on that side of the line, I know what its like; but I also know how to treat a customer…

Share the road!

Every day I encounter numerous cyclists along the main roads – I’m sure we all do… I really have no problem with this if they show the same road respect they expect in return; however, more and more this does not seem to be the case.

A large majority of cyclists seem to have adopted some odd sense of entitlement.. I suspect most of it started with their “Share the road” campaign..

A couple of days ago I was driving down Rt 62; this is a busy main road which the shoulder is clearly marked.  There’s enough space between the white lines & the sidewalk to ride a bike in.. Coming around the bend I’m forced to jump on the brakes because these cyclists were riding 2 by 2 and halfway into my lane.
At this point you’d think they would move over and ride in a single line.. of course not, that would make too much sense.  These assholes continue riding while causing a backup of traffic forcing me to wait for a chance to pull into the oncoming lane so I can drive around them..

Why is it only the motorists have to share the road? This is not an isolated case – I can’t count how many times I have to swing way into the oncoming lane to get around cyclists because they’re in the road.  Let’s not forget about those riders that suddenly decide to cross without even looking -  they throw out an arm to signal they’re turning and just go for it.

The main problem here isn’t that I have to go around them.. it’s the fact that their ignorance is going to cause accidents.  What happens if someone comes around the bend and takes one of these riders out?  I’m sure they’ll all be up in arms about how the driver should have paid more attention – Yet no one will say “hey, why was that cyclist in the middle of the road?”….
It’s an avoidable situation – You can safely ride along the side of the road and stay out of traffic – there is no reason cars should have to come to a near stop and need to drive into oncoming traffic just to get around you.  You’re putting the safety of others, as well as your own at risk.

There’s one thing I notice the most.  In every case in which I’ve encountered this it’s always been the clowns in full spandex gear.  I see plenty of people out riding their bikes, dressed like normal people out for a ride who show simple road respect.  They stay out of the lane and use caution before crossing the street.  Even the teenagers show more concern than these “serious” cyclists.  Give me a break, this isn’t the Tour De France, you’re gross ass does not belong in spandex.  Just because you ride a bike doesn’t make it OK for you to wear clothes like that.

Power up!

Everything about this screams bad idea, but your inner-childhood memories scream YES, DRINK IT!

Marketing WIN!

stick to movies

Few actors piss me off as much as Sean Penn.  What a self centered, ignorant jackass.   Lots of actors/actresses run their mouth about things they don’t fully understand, especially when it comes to politics..  However, that’s no different than anyone else – only that their ignorant comments are more publicly available.

I found this article rather entertaining, and at the same time slightly frightening..  It reminded me of the images from the Katrina disaster…  All the tragedy, hardship, and pain.. yet here comes superhero Sean Penn with his boat… Oh yeah, and a shotgun & camera crew.  For someone with as much money as he has, would it not have been more beneficial to fund a group that could actually provide some help and relief?  Is he so blinded by his own ego that he thought he could save New Orleans?

Ok, so back to this article…  The point is not whether or not Hugo Chavez is good or bad – it’s that free speech should only be available to those that agree with Penn.  How much of an ego does one need to have to actually say these things with a straight face?

It seems to me that he makes himself out to be exactly that of which Chavez is accused of doing – Silencing out media critics.

Personally I don’t have an opinion of Chavez, for the sole fact that I don’t know enough of the situation to form an educated opinion.  What I do know is that I can’t stand people like Sean Penn – The mouth is always running when the cameras are rolling.. You want people to take you seriously, but it’s followed with some extremely ridiculous comments..

Am I wrong?

out of touch

Lately I’ve lost my motivation to write.. Just don’t have it in me. Throughout the day there’s so many topics that hit my brain, but by the end of the day I just don’t feel up to it.
Why does something so simple feel like such a task?

I do enjoy writing – it’s like a form of therapy… kind of..? No wait, it’s more like stress relief. Yes, that’s it.

I miss the warm weather, and sunshine, which seems to be a rarity lately.

Until later.

uncommon sense

Everyone always says use common sense…. Unfortunately it seems that these days sense is not so common.

When did we get so afraid to make exceptions.. why is the ‘all or nothing’ rule the only one that can apply anymore?
On the radio this morning they were talking about a town in Connecticut (Litchfield I believe) which the board voted to ban yellow ribbons from the town common.  From what I understand the argument is that if they allow the yellow ribbons, they have to allow all ribbons…

First off, I think that most of the ‘ribbons’ out there stand for a good cause anyhow, but the point is you don’t have to allow them all….  The yellow ribbons stand for those that sacrificed for this country, gave this board the ability to make these decisions, and i feel like that alone should make the case.

Commie bastards.

giving back

Only a few days left to finish Christmas shopping…  I think I’m going to finish mine on Christmas Eve. It seems to be what I do every year, and why stop now?

This year just doesn’t feel like Christmas at all, and I can’t figure out why, something is just missing from this year.  Maybe shopping on the 24th will help it feel more like Christmas?

I’m not much for the whole gift ordeal… Don’t get me wrong, sure I love gifts, but it’s just not a big deal to me anymore.  Every year it’s more important to me that I get a good sized package out to the soldiers I’ve adopted (adoptaussoldier.org), and hope it brings a bit of home to them, or atleast a smile.
I highly recommend adopting a soldier… They do so much for us, and here’s an opportunity to give back.

Aside from that, give a few bucks to your local food bank, and the Salvation Army.  We’re all tight on coin this year, but throwing a couple bucks now could come back to you in the future.. You may one day be in the position that you need the assistance. I’m sure it’s not easy for folks to swallow their pride and ask for help, let’s make sure the help is there for them.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!  If you don’t celebrate Christmas, have a great holiday whatever you celebrate!

and of course, Festivus for the rest of us!
